Burgas

CITY INFORMATION

Burgas is the fifth largest city in Bulgaria and the second largest seaside resort on the Bulgarian coast. It is also the largest port on the southern shores of the Black Sea. The town is located between three lakes: Burgas, Atanasov and Mandre, and is protected from the north by the hills of Stara Planina. The population is less than two hundred thousand and you can find it on the map south of Varna in the Burgas Bay. The city has experienced unprecedented growth in tourism in recent years and has become a very popular tourist destination.

Today’s rather industrial center was founded by the ancient Greeks. At that time, however, he was named Pyrgos. The reason for its creation is a strategically important place, which is why a military unit was based here at that time. In addition, a large port on the Black Sea coast has been built here. In the 14th century the Ottomans founded a military fortress here, and three centuries later three thousand people lived in the area. During this period the city received its present name. Its heyday came in the early 19th century, when a modern port was built here and thanks to it Burgas became a commercial center of the whole region. With the introduction of the railways, the city’s economy is enriched by revenues from industrial enterprises processing oil and chemicals. Today’s Bourgas boasts a large international airport, which annually attracts thousands of tourists from around the world.

The center of Burgas around the old town is very attractive and touristy. It consists of a large number of cafes, restaurants and many boulevards. The main artery of the city is Alexandrovska Avenue, leading through two large squares. On the first of them, the Czech consulate is housed in a multi-storey building, which somewhat undermines the good impression of the surrounding construction. But you will also find interesting fountains, which are often immortalized by tourists. The second square still bears the infallible signs of the communist era. There is a statue of the right-wing Soviet soldier, whom people call “Alyosha”. Nearby is Helicon – a Bulgarian bookstore, where you can get cards that are not available elsewhere. The city center also offers a visit to several certainly interesting museums. Here you can learn something about the history of the city, but also of the whole region. The Archaeological Museum may surprise you with its main attractions, which are aquariums and terrariums with exotic animals. Also interesting is the unusual Armenian church with a memorial plaque in honor of the embrace of the Armenian genocide in 1915 (Bulgaria is a frequent target of Armenian refugees from Turkey). However, the multicultural region of Burgas can also offer the modern church of St. St. Cyril and Methodius, Roman Catholic Church or synagogue.

The town has a beautiful and wide beach, which is surrounded by greenery and dotted with fast food stalls. There are also public toilets and showers. The beach is a very nice and well maintained marine park. When you visit it, you will feel that it is a complete green oasis, full of rare trees, flower beds, statues and fountains. You can just sit here in the shade of a cafe and enjoy the pleasant sea view. Some umbrellas are free, others are the same as sunbeds for a fee. Together you will pay a maximum of seven lions for them. From the bridge leading from the beach to the sea, cruise ships head to the island of St. Anastasia. The beach of the city, which is washed by the Black Sea, is unusual with its dark gray sand, which contains magnetite and thus has a healing effect.

If you are interested in the prices of food, goods and restaurants, they are the lowest on the coast. In addition, you can visit the malls of global retail chains such as Bila, Kaufland, Lidl and others.
